授居家二众三皈依
The Ceremony of Ordaining Refuge in Three Jewels to Laymen and Laywomen

注意
Note:

一、受皈依者须先将本仪规阅读一遍。俾知仪式大概,及和尚开导语句,免临时茫然。
1. Applicants are supposed to read this instruction in advance for brief understanding of the ceremony and the commentaries of master, so as not to be frustrated on the occasion of ceremony.


二、唱和或答语之字句,如能预先读熟最好。否则须要审阅慎答。最好能先演习一次。
2. It’s best to peruse the responsorial words in advance; otherwise applicants need to be cautious in read and reply. A rehearsal would thus be great.


三、和尚顶礼三宝时,须一心作观,祈求加被,代佛宣化,绍隆佛种,发殷重心。
3. When the master bows down to prostrate to the Three Jewels, he needs to be concentrated and supplicates Buddhas for empowerment, to preach on their behalves, to nourish seeds of the Dharma, and to initiate resolution of Bodhi.


四、受皈依者亦应清净身口意三业,诚心受持。须知以此皈依十方一切三宝,永为佛子。不仅是拜一位师父。以此功德,不失人身。应生欢喜心。对师所说须听受清楚,方得皈戒之体,切须注意。
4. Applicants, on the other hand, should also purify their bodies, speeches and minds, for being ordained sincerely. It is supposed to be known that applicants would take refuge in all of Three Jewels in ten directions through the ordination and become disciples of the Buddha forever. It’s not only to prostrate themselves before a master, but moreover, to maintain the human body with such merits; the applicants should thus be delightful. The body of precept can not be attained without listening to the master clearly, thus applicants need to pay attention.


五、诵念忏悔文时,座上师当运大悲拔苦之心,受皈依者应生深重惭愧之念。如法忏悔,庶使罪花凋谢,业果弃捐。
5. When reciting the verses of repentance, the master should apply great compassion meanwhile the applicants should feel ashamed deeply. Repenting as prescribed by the Dharma would wither the sin flowers and perish the karmic fruits.


(一)请师
1. Invitation for the Master

一、受三皈依者齐集大殿,对面立。
(1). All applicants who will take refuge in Three Jewels gather at the Grand hall and stand face to face.


二、鸣引磬,接钟鼓,转向上;顶礼三拜,一问讯。
(2). With ringing the inverted bell followed by the great bell and drum, applicants turn to the front. Bow and prostrate three times, followed by Wen Xun[1] once.


三、转身再对面立。
(3). Turn back as standing face to face.


四、引礼师引为首者,迎请法师。
(4). The protocol monk guides the leaders of applicants to invite the master.


五、法师到大殿已,顶礼三拜;为首者执香旁立。
(5). After the arrival of master in the Grand Hall, all applicants bow and prostrate three times then the leaders stand aside with holding incense.  


六、法师拈香,升座,敛衣而坐。
(6). The master picks burning incense, steps up to the high seat and sits down with rob tidied up.  

 

(二)礼佛(举香赞)
2. Bowing to the Buddha (Praise with the incense raising)

性觉灵明,寂照真常。昔迷今悟露堂堂,三宝是慈航。一瓣心香,皈礼法中王。

南无香云盖菩萨摩诃萨。南无香云盖菩萨摩诃萨。南无香云盖菩萨摩诃萨!

(初举赞时,为首者至中位,问讯。再至香几前,上香后,复位,顶礼三拜。唱至“香”字拜下。“摩”字起身。二旁受三皈者,唱至“南”字转向上,随同为首者顶礼,毕,长跪。)

The inherently awakening self-nature manifests the true permanence in immutability. It is lost in the past but enlightened and brilliantly revealed now because of the Three Jewels as ferry of compassion. With a piece of incense from my heart, sincerely bowing and prostrating to the King of Dharma.

Namo Incense Cloud Canopy Bodhisattva, Mahasattva! (Repeat twice)

At very beginning of incense rising, leaders stand in the middle and Wen Xun. Then they arrive at incense table to light the incense, return afterwards and bow down to prostrate three times. Kneel and bow when chanting (Xiang1) and rise when chanting (Mo2). All applicants turn to the front when chanting (Nan2) and bow down to prostrate with the leaders. After all done, remain kneeling.

 

(三)求受皈依  维那师云:
3. Application of Taking Refuge in Three Jewels [The Karmadana (Buddhist Deacon) states]

夫宅中宝藏,非指示而莫晓;衣里明珠,必解说而方知。若不依僧,安能闻法?苟非佛法,无以出尘。今居士等,身处世俗,念欲皈真,理须求请明师,乞受净法。我今为汝等恭请某堂上某和尚,为汝等作三皈本师。请师之语,汝合自陈。恐汝未能,我今教汝。称自己名(受皈依者,即各称自己法名〇〇)其余言词,皆随我道:

大德!一心念我,弟子〇〇(各称法名)今请大德为三皈本师。愿大德为我作三皈本师。我依大德故,得受清净三皈。慈悯故。

(三请,每请一叩首。第三遍为“大慈悯故”。 然后长跪而听。)
Treasures hided in the house cannot be known without any indication; pearls sewed in the clothes cannot be realized until having explanation[2]. Without depending on the Sangha, how could the Dharma be heard? Without practicing the Dharma, how could the worldly life be renounced? Although staying in the conventional world, lay people wish to take refuge in the truth. They should thus seek a great master and pure Dharma. Now may I respectfully invite the Venerable Master *** of *** Hall as your fundamental teacher for Refuge in Three Jewels. The invitation would better to be prepared by yourselves, but I may teach you now in case you are not able to do that. Say your own names (Applicants say their disciple names respectively). State the rest words by following me:

Your Venerable! Please wholeheartedly pay attention to me, your disciple *** (Applicants say disciple names respectively). Now may I invite Your Venerable as the fundamental teacher of my refuge in Three Jewels. May Your Venerable, be the fundamental teacher of my refuge in Three Jewels. By relying on Your Venerable, I will be purely ordained the Refuge in Three Jewels, with your compassion. (Invite three times and bow down to prostrate each time. At the third time, applicants should say “with your great compassion” in the end. Keep kneeling and listening afterward.)

 

(四)开导  和尚鸣尺云:
4.  Commentary by the Master (The master beats the ruler and states)

(各节开示文句,义理精深。须请法师读后详为讲解,务令大众均能明白了解为要。)
The Commentaries of each chapter have subtle and profound meanings. It is necessary to invite the Master for explanation after recitation, to ensure the mass would thoroughly understand. 

善男子等,汝今既已殷勤申请,可为汝作三皈本师。所有言词,听我开导。
Good Men. Since you have made such sincere invitation, I can be your fundamental teacher of refuge in Three Jewels. Now listen to my commentaries as followed.

原夫佛未御宇,邪师说法,言皆是妄。
Before the Buddha had not civilized the universe, there were only evil teachers’ instructions which were all lies and faults.

法不契理,盲引痴愚,欲升反坠。
Those teachings did not comply with the truth, just as a blind leading the fools. Although they wished to promote themselves, finally be degenerated

佛出世间,如杲(音gao4)日丽天,群昏灼破;
The birth of the Buddha in the world is like the bright sun shining up the sky, enlightened all fools.  

皓月当空,诸有清凉。
It is also like the luminous moon above in the sky, resulting in comfortable coolness.

诚反邪归正之导师,是与乐拔苦之慈父!
The Buddha is the real guider who converts vice into virtue, and also a kind father who inspires happiness and eradicates tribulation!

良以一切智,穷彻因果,若性若相,靡不实知。
With comprehensive wisdom, the Buddha completely grasps cause and effect, thoroughly understands the nature and its appearances.

两足尊,圆满福慧,若折若摄,无非利物。
As the most honored among human and celestial beings, and perfect in both felicity and wisdom, the Buddha aims at nothing but benefiting all beings whether he subdues or absorbs them.

自佛始证无上菩提,初游波罗奈国,耶输伽父,信受三皈。
Right after accomplishing the Unsurpassed Enlightenment, the Buddha began to wander in Banaras country, where Yashodhara and Kapilavastu father (Shuddhodana)[3] were converted and took the refuge in Three Jewels.

教源肇起于西天,法水漫流于东土。
The Buddhism originates in the western Asia, and the Dharma spreads towards the eastern.

直至于今,在家二众,咸沾恩泽。
Even until now, both laymen and laywomen are still being bestowed blessing.

汝等欲受三皈者,准律所明,有五种三皈:一、翻邪三皈;二、五戒三皈;三、八戒三皈;四、十戒三皈;五、具足戒三皈。
The applicants, who are willing to take refuge in the Three Jewels, should be aware of the definition of taking refuge in Three Jewels, which have five categories as followed:
1.Refuge of Conversion; 
2.Refuge of Five Precepts; 
3.Refuge of Eight Precepts; 
4.Refuge of Ten Precepts; 
5.Refuge of Complete-Ordination Precepts.

然今所受,是第一种三皈也。复于所皈三宝,而有住持一体之别。
What you are going to take now is the first one. The Three Jewels you are going to take refuge in consists of ‘Three Jewels of Existence’ and ‘Three Jewels of Unity’, which do not have identical meanings.

若不知之,恐执相昧理,偏理废相。是故我今先为示明:
Without the meanings being comprehended, attachment to either the appearance or the principle may occur. Therefore, I would like to illuminate them in advance.

所言“住持三宝”者,如来出世,夜睹明星,树王得道,是为“佛宝”;依一实相,说四谛法,是为“法宝”;初度陈如五人,召善来比丘,是为“僧宝”。
The so-called ‘Three Jewels of Existence’ refers that after born in the world, the Tathagata, attaining the enlightenment and coronation of the Dharma by observing the stars at night, is the Buddha Jewel. The Four Noble Truths, preached according to the absolute fundamental reality, is the Dharma Jewel. Kaundinya with other four, edified as the very first five disciples and ordained by simply saying “come, bhikkhu”, is the Sangha Jewel. 

佛灭度后,以刻铸图绘如来遗像,是为“佛宝”;贝叶黄卷,三藏圣教,是为“法宝”;剃发染衣,严净毗尼,绍弘佛化,是为“僧宝”。
After Entering into Nirvana, the Buddha is memorialized in the form of sculpture and painting, considered as the Buddha Jewel. Tripitaka (Sutras, Vinaya, Abhidharma) as noble teaching of the Buddha, written on palm leaves and yellow scrolls, is considered as the Dharma Jewel. Aspirants, shaving hairs and dyeing robs, strictly observing the pure precepts of the Buddha, widely spreading and propagating his edification, is the Sangha Jewel.  

所言“一体三宝”者,以实相慧,觉了诸法,非空非有,亦空亦有,双忘双照,三智圆觉,是自性“佛宝”;所觉法性之理,三谛具足,是自性“法宝”;此觉慧与理事和合,是自性“僧宝”。而住持一体,悉称宝者,不为世法之所侵凌故,不为烦恼之所染污故。
The so-called ‘Three Jewels of Unity’, perceiving all substances with wisdom of mindfulness, as neither void nor materialization, also both void and materialization, reflecting and detaching from each other, perfection and enlightenment of the three kinds of wisdom, is the Buddha Jewel of self- nature. The enlightened principle of Dharma, with completion of the three dogmas (the true dogma, the ordinary dogma, the mean dogma) is the Dharma Jewel of self-nature. The harmonious integration of the enlightened wisdom and the principle-appearance dyad is the Sangha Jewel of self-nature. The reason why the ones of both Existence and Unity are called ‘Jewels’ is because neither of them is infringed by secular world or contaminated by affliction.   

所言“皈依”者,《显宗论》云:“救济义。以皈依三宝,能息无边生死苦轮,远离一切大怖畏故。”须知,舍住持三宝,别无一体三宝;离一体三宝,更无住持三宝。住持是相,相即性中之相;一体是性,性即相中之性。性相一如,二而不二。迷之者,流转生死;悟之者,成等正觉。
To take refuge, as defined in <The Treatise of Exoteric Schools>: “It has the essential meaning of rescuing. It is because to take refuge in the Three Jewels could terminate the sorrowful circle of endless transmigration and be apart from all dreads.” It should be known that there are not Unitary Three Jewels beside Existent Three Jewels, and vice verse. The Existent Three Jewels are phenomena, phenomena of the nature; the Unitary Three Jewels are the nature, the nature of phenomena. The nature and phenomenon are integrative entirety, which seem respective but actually complementary to each other. The confused ones would roam between death and birth; the inspired ones would attain the  Samyak-sambuddha[4].

汝今既能深信皈依“住持三宝”,则本有“一体三宝”,法尔具足。如是性相不乖,理事双明,方为真正受三皈者。(上文请再详讲一遍)
The inherent Three Jewels of Unity would be completely perceived since you already have deep faith in the Three Jewels of Existence now. Therefore, those with the nature and phenomena harmonizing together, principle and appearance both understood, are real applicants to take refuge in Three Jewels.

The commentaries above should be illuminated again in more details.

汝已谛闻我语,一一能解否?
You have sincerely heard my words, can you understand every aspect of them?

受皈依者应即答云:能解。
Applicants should instantly answer:'Yes, I can.'

汝既能解,一一能如法受持否?
Since you can understand, can you uphold every aspect in accordance with the Dharma?

受皈依者应即答云:能如法受持。
Applicants should instantly answer: Yes, I can .


(五)请圣  和尚鸣尺云:
5. Invitation for the Sages (The master beats the ruler and states)

善男子!汝等既能如法受持三皈者,应当先请十方三宝,以为依怙之尊。次屈一切万灵,而作镇严之主。汝等起立合掌,至心作观,随我启请。各人称自己法名。(受皈依者,即各称自己法名〇〇)(和尚起座,拈香作梵。海众合掌,齐音同和)
Good men! Since you are able to take refuge in the Three Jewels prescribed by the Buddha now, all Three Jewels in ten directions should be invited first as the honored to rely on, and all sentimental beings should be absorbed as protectors as followed. Now, all rise and put palms together up to the chest, follow me to make invitation with concentration in reflection. Say your disciple names respectively.

Applicants respectively say their disciple names ***.

The venerable Master rises from seat, picks incense and chants mantra. The sea-like assemblies put palms together respectively and respond in chorus. 
 
香花迎,香花请。
Welcome with incenses and flowers. Invite with incenses and flowers.

弟子〇〇(各称法名)一心奉请:娑婆教主本师释迦牟尼佛。西方接引阿弥陀佛。当来下生弥勒尊佛。尽虚空,遍法界一切诸佛。惟愿不违本誓,慈光摄照,证明受皈。(三请,每请一叩首)
I, disciple *** (say disciple names respectively) sincerely invite:
The founder and fundamental teacher of Buddhism in Saha-World, Shakyamuni Buddha;
The guider towards Ultimate Blessing Land in West, Amitabha;
The honored to-be-born in the world, Maitreya.
And all the Buddhas in all spaces and all dharma-realms
Wish you not to violate the original vows, but testify the ordination by illuminating us with compassion.  
(Invite three times and bow down to prostrate each time)


香花迎,香花请。
Welcome with incenses and flowers. Invite with incenses and flowers.


弟子〇〇(各称法名)一心奉请:大小二乘。毗尼律藏。五篇三聚,解脱木叉。十二分经,权实教典。离欲真净,甚深法宝。谨运一心,皈命顶礼!(三请,每请一叩首)
I, disciple *** (say disciple names respectively) sincerely invite: 
Mahayana and Hinayana; Vinaya-pitaka;
The Five Chapters and the three types of cumulative commandments; 
The Pratimoksa of liberation;
The twelve divisions of the Mahayana canon;
Temporary and fundamental scriptures;
Detachment from cravings and true purity are profound Dharma-Gem, which would be bowed and prostrated to and taken in refuge with sincerely applying concentration 
(Invite three times and bow down to prostrate each time)


香花迎,香花请。
Welcome with incenses and flowers. Invite with incenses and flowers.

弟子〇〇(各称法名)一心奉请:观音势至,文殊普贤。清净海众,诸大菩萨。律藏会上优波离尊者。西天东土历代祖师。传南山宗诸大律师。中兴律祖。慧云馨公大和尚。某某堂上某下某老和尚。惟愿不违本誓,慈光摄照,证明受皈。(三请,每请一叩首)
I, disciple *** (say disciple names respectively) sincerely invite:
Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta.
Manjushri and Samantabhadra.
The pure sea-like assemblies and Maha-Bodhisattvas.
Arya Upali in the assembly of Vinaya.
The ancient masters in successive dynasties of both West and East.
The masters passing on the Vinaya Sect of Mount Zhongnan.
The Reverend Master Huiyun who revived the Vinaya Sect..
The Venerable Master *** of *** Hall
Wish you not to violate the original vows, but testify the ordination by illuminating us with compassion.  
(Invite three times and bow down to prostrate each time)


香花迎,香花请。
Welcome with incenses and flowers. Invite with incenses and flowers.


〇〇(各称法名)一心奉请:光明会上,寄位诸天。梵释四王,天龙八部。伽蓝土地,护戒神王。金刚力士,幽显灵祇。惟愿不违本誓,监坛护戒。(三请,每请一叩首)
I, disciple *** (say disciple names respectively) sincerely invite:
All celestial beings in the assembly of Brightness;
Brahma and Sovereign Shakra (Indra); 
The Four Deva-Kings of the Four Quarters (Chatyr-maharaja);
The eight classes of super-natural beings (Ashta gatyah) ; 
The God of the Land of the monastery; 
The guardian spirit of Buddhist monasteries (The patron deity of Vinaya); 
The Vajra Powerful Lord;
And the spirits in the shades or the region of the living.  
Wish you not to violate the original vows, but guard the platform and protect the Vinaya.
(Invite three times and bow down to prostrate each time)


(如是一、二、三请已竟,和尚就座而坐。受皈依者,仍复长跪合掌,诚谛而听。)
After repeating such invitation twice, the Venerable Master approaches seat and sits. Applicants keep folding hands and kneeling for long, and listen in earnest.

 

(六)忏悔  和尚鸣尺云:
6. Repentance (The master beats ruler and states)

上来迎请三宝证明。今则三宝慈光,摄照汝等。窃恐旷劫至今,造诸恶业,障闭心源,不堪纳受。是故汝等,应对三宝前,生大惭愧,生大怖畏。思地狱苦,发菩提心,求哀忏悔。称自己名,(受皈依者各称自己法名)〇〇随我语言。一一自说:
That was the invitation for the Three Jewels to testimony just now. Now you are all illuminated by compassion of the Three Jewels. I am afraid that you have committed a large amount of karmic sins since the past without beginning, which could block your mind from accepting ordination. The great shame and dread of you should thus be engendered in front of the Three Jewels. You should also think about the sufferings in hell, initiate resolution of Bodhi, and implore for repentance. Say your disciple names *** (Applicants say their disciple names respectively) Say your own names with following my words:

(和尚合掌作梵举二句,受皈依者照复二句。受皈依者唱每第二句末字毕,叩首。俟和尚唱每第一句末字,起身。惟并不起立。如是三番,求其忏悔。)
The master puts palms together and intones two verses, followed by the repetition of applicants. They should bow and prostrate at the very end of each second verse of their own, and rise to kneel at the very end of each first verse of the master. Entirely repeat twice to implore for repentance.

我弟子〇〇(各称法名)
I, disciple *** (Applicants say disciple names respectively)

从于无始  以至今生  毁破三宝  作一阐提
From the past without beginning, up to the present life, has been destructing the Three Jewels and behaving unfaithfully (Icchantika).

谤大乘经  断学般若  弑害父母  出佛身血
Slandering the Sutras of Mahayana (Great Vehicle Scriptures), ending study Prajna (Wisdom of Perfection), murdering parents, discharging blood of the Buddhas.

污僧伽蓝  破他梵行  焚毁塔寺  盗用僧物
Soiling monasteries, defiling celibacies of others, burning up pagodas and temples, stealing possession of monks.

起诸邪见  拨无因果  狎近恶友  违背良师
Generating various evil thoughts, denying the cause and effect, ganging up with immoral fellows, defecting from virtuous masters.

自作教他  见闻随喜  如是等罪  无量无边
Committing on my own or inciting others, rejoicing when witness and hear such commitments. Sins as above are infinite.

故于今日  生大惭愧  克诚披露  求哀忏悔
The great shame is thus engendered today. I sincerely release such commitments and implore for repentance.

惟愿三宝  慈悲摄受  放净光明  照触我身
Wish the Three Jewels to embrace me with mercy by radiating pure brightness to illuminate me.

诸恶消灭  三障蠲除  复本心源  究竟清净
Various evils are extinguished and the three obstacles (Greed, Hatred, and Ignorance) are eradicated, to resume the true nature and attain ultimate tranquility.


(以上和唱三遍)

南无普贤王菩萨摩诃萨(三称)
Homage to Universal Worthy Bodhisattva (Samantabhadra Bodhisattva-Mahasattva) (Repeat twice)

 

(七)受皈  和尚鸣尺云:
7. Ordination for Refuge (The master beats the ruler and says)

汝等对三宝前忏悔已竟,罪业必定消除,身心自然清净。汝当外托事仪,内明理观,而起广大慈护之心,遍缘一切情非情境。于此境上,誓断恶修善,利济众生。心境缘览,系法于心。心法和合,名曰三皈体。皈依之语,汝合自陈。恐汝未能,应随我语,端身合掌,至心皈依。
Your repentance in front of the Three Jewels is accomplished, the karmic sins are thus bound to be eliminated and purity would apply to both your body and mind. You should initiate the mind of great compassion and protection under all circumstances regarding both sentimental and unsentimental beings by comprehending illusionary phenomena of impermanence and inherent principle of immutability. Under those conditions, you should vow to eradicate evil deeds and cultivate good ones to benefit living beings. Remain the Dharma in your minds by experiencing both phenomena and principle. The integration of Dharma and mind is called ‘Body of Refuge”. The vow of ordination would better to be prepared by yourselves, but you may follow me in case you are not able to do that. Now kneel properly and put palms together, with utter sincerity for ordination.

我〇〇(各称法名)
尽形寿皈依佛   尽形寿皈依法   尽形寿皈依僧
(如是三番皈依,三叩首)
I, disciple *** (Say disciple names respectively)
Take Refuge in the Buddha until the end of my life
Take Refuge in the Dharma until the end of my life
Take Refuge in the Sangha until the end of my life
Repeat twice and bow down to prostrate each time

和尚鸣尺云:
The master beats the ruler and states:

上来三皈,正是纳体于心。更加三结,得法圆满,谓之三番羯磨。汝当至心,随我语道:
That was the ordination of refuge which is exactly the acceptance of “Embodiment of Refuge” into your mind. In addition, three reinforcements called ‘three-requests’ (Three-time Karma[5]) would be imposed so as to perfect the ordination. You should be utterly sincere to speak with following my words: 
 

我〇〇(各称法名)皈依佛竟,宁舍身命,终不皈依自在天魔等。皈依如来至真等正觉,是我所尊。慈悯故。
I, disciple *** (say disciple names respectively)
Since having taken refuge in the Buddha, I will never take refuge in Mara-King and so forth even if abandoning my life. Taking refuge in the ultimate enlightenment of Tathagata is what I respect, with your compassion.

(如是依师自说毕,一叩首。三说三叩首。下皆同此)
Bow and prostrate after all done by following the master. Repeat twice, and similar hereinafter.

我〇〇(各称法名)皈依法竟。宁舍身命,终不皈依外道典籍。皈依如来所说三藏十二部一切经典,是我所尊。慈悯故。
I, disciple *** (say disciple names respectively)
Since having taken refuge in the Dharma, I will never take refuge in heretical scriptures and so forth even if abandoning my life. Taking refuge in the Tripitaka and the twelve divisions of the Mahayana canon is what I respect, with your compassion.

我〇〇(各称法名)皈依僧竟。宁舍身命,终不皈依外道邪众。皈依清净福田僧,是我所尊。慈悯故。
I, disciple *** (say disciple names respectively)
Since having taken refuge in the Sangha, I will never take refuge in heretical disciples and so forth even if abandoning my life. Taking refuge in pure monks of blessing land is what I respect, with your compassion.

(以上各三遍)
Respectively repeat each section twice.
 

(八)发愿  和尚鸣尺云:
8. Taking vows (The master beats the ruler and says)

善男子!汝等既皈依三宝,已获本体,则心有所皈,身有所依。当起妙用,发大誓愿。所言妙用大愿者,应观苦、集、灭、道四谛,而发四弘誓愿:
Good men! Since you have already taken refuge in Three Jewels and accepted its embodiment, thus your minds have shelter and your bodies have dependence. Wonderful action should be inspired and universal vows should be taken. Referring to the wonderful action and great vows, the Four Noble Truths --- The Truth of Suffering, The Truth of Accumulating, The Truth of Extinction and The Truth of Way, should be contemplated, and thus Four Universal Vows should be taken:

一观三界九有一切众生,未度苦谛三苦八苦,无量诸苦,迷真逐妄,不思出离。是故汝今发愿,度尽众生。
The first contemplation is that all the living beings in the three realms and nine kinds of sentient beings have not yet crossed over The Truth of Suffering, three sufferings, eight sufferings and numerous sufferings. They confuse with truth and chase after illusion without attempt at libration. Therefore, you should take a vow of rescuing infinity of living beings.

二观三界九有一切众生,未解集谛,十使、见思、五住等惑,缠缚不脱,随业报生。是故汝今发愿,断尽烦恼。
The second contemplation is that all the living beings in the three realms and nine kinds of sentient beings have not yet realized The Truth of Accumulating Ten Fundamental Passions?, Illusion of View and Thought?, Five Fundamental Conditions of Distressful Delusions? and so forth. They are burdened without relief and reborn due to their karma retribution. Therefore, you should take a vow of eradicating infinity of afflictions.

三观三界九有一切众生,未安道谛。戒定般若,十二部经。无熏闻思,不知修学。是故汝今发愿,勤学法门。
The third contemplation is that all the living beings in the three realms and nine kinds of sentient beings have not yet settled in The Truth of Way, They do not hear, deliberate and study Discipline, Meditation[6] and Wisdom[7], the twelve divisions of the Mahayana canon. Therefore, you should take a vow of diligently practice infinity of Dharma doors.

四观三界九有一切众生,未得灭谛。迷觉体者,不信佛心;悟觉体者,分证未圆。是故汝今发愿,必成佛道。
The fourth contemplation is that all the living beings in the three realms and nine kinds of sentient beings have not yet obtained The Truth of Extinction. They either have no faith in the heart of Buddha since confusing with the embodiment of enlightenment, or gradually cultivate towards perfection since apprehending the embodiment of enlightenment. Therefore, you should take a vow of attaining the ultimate enlightenment by all means.

汝今既知观境发愿,当以慧照现前。随我语言,至心合掌。恭对三宝前,发四弘誓愿。
Since having known to take vows based on circumstances, you should now reflect the present with wisdom. Put your palms together and speak with following my words. Take the Four Universal Vows in front of the Three Jewels with utter sincerity. 
 
 (翻译注:文中一到四观的顺序是苦谛,集谛,道谛,灭谛
Comments:
The sequence of the four contemplation mentioned above is: The Truth of Suffering, The Truth of Accumulating, The Truth of Extinction and The Truth of Way:

十使,又名十大惑、十根本烦恼。1、贪欲,2、嗔恚,3、无明,4、慢,5、疑,6、身见,7、边见,8、邪见,9、见取见,10、戒禁取见。前五使名五钝使;后五使名五利使。
Ten Fundamental Passions, is The Ten deluders; The Ten messengers. They include five sharp and five dull messengers. The five dull ones are desire, hatred, ignorance, pride, and doubt; and the five sharp ones are the five wrong views: the wrong view of the reality of personality, the extreme view, the view of denying cause and effect, stubborn perverted view, the view of clinging to heterodox ascetic.

见思,见惑思惑。见思惑指意根对法尘起诸邪见,故名见惑,五根贪爱五尘而起想着,故名思惑。
Illusion of View and Thought, especially illusory or misleading views and thoughts, illusions from imperfect perception, with temptation to love, hate, etc.

五住地
Five Fundamental Conditions of Distressful Delusions.

根本烦恼,能生枝末烦恼,称为住地。有五种,1,见一处住地;2,欲爱住地;3,色爱住地;4,有爱住地;5,无明住地。)

(和尚说一句,受皈者复一句。四句毕,一叩首。共三遍。)
Each sentence of the master is followed by the repeat of recipients. Bow and prostrate once after all four verses done. Entirely repeat twice.

我〇〇(各称法名)众生无边誓愿度。
I. *** (say disciple names respectively)
take a vow of rescuing limitless living beings.

我〇〇(各称法名)烦恼无尽誓愿断。
I. *** (say disciple names respectively)
take a vow of eradicating inexhaustible afflictions.

我〇〇(各称法名)法门无量誓愿学。
I. *** (say disciple names respectively) 
take a vow of practicing immeasurable manners of Dharma.

我〇〇(各称法名)佛道无上誓愿成。
I. *** (say disciple names respectively)
take a vow of attaining the unsurpassed Way of Enlightenment.


(九)显益劝嘱   和尚鸣尺云:
9. Benefits illumination and Advice (the master beats the ruler and states)

善男子!汝今已发四弘誓愿,则智为先导。但坚信行,有愿必从。汝虽身同世俗,心是菩萨。所获功德,不可思议。
Good men! Since having taken the Four Universal Vows now, you should take wisdom as lead. As long as you strengthen faith and cultivation, all of your vows would inevitably come true. Although living in the mundane world, you have the same hearts as Boddhisattva. The merits and virtues you have obtained are inconceivable.

《校量功德经》云:“若三千大千世界,满中如来,如稻麻竹苇。人以四事供养,满二万岁。诸佛灭后,各起塔庙,复以香花种种供养。其福虽多,不如有人以纯净心,皈依三宝所得功德。”
《The Measuring Merits Sutra》says: "If some people keep on making the Four Offerings (clothes, beddings, foods, medicines) to all the Tathagata who are full of the Threefold Great Thousand World Realms as innumerable as rice, hemp, bamboo and bulrush for entire of twenty thousand years. They also build pagodas and temples and offer a variety of incenses and flowers after Nirvana of the Buddhas. The blessings that these people obtained are enormous, but much less than the merits and virtues of ones who have taken refuge in the Three Jewels with sincere and pure mind."

汝今当生大欢喜,生希有想。愈增深信,愈坚弘愿。出烦恼渊,至菩提岸。即今所受三皈,以为出世正因。慎勿退失,谨守修行。
Therefore, great happiness and thought of rarity should be engendered. The stronger your faith is, the more solid your vows are. You should escape from abyss of afflictions and reach the shore of Bodhi. The refuge you have taken in the Three Jewels is the main cause of renouncing mundane world, thus you must not flinch but strengthen cultivation cautiously.

汝能依教奉行否?
Can you practice according to the teachings?

受皈依者应答云:
能依教奉行!
(The recipients should reply) Yes, I can.
 

(十)回向   
10. Transference of Merit

和尚鸣尺一下,敛衣起座,合掌云:
The master beats the ruler once, rises with rob tidied up. He puts palms together and states

授皈依功德圆满,大众合掌,同音念佛回向。
维那师云:
The Ordination attains perfection. The assemblies put palms together and chant name of the Buddha in chorus for transference of merit.
[The Karmadana (Buddhist Deacon) states]

西方极乐世界大慈大悲阿弥陀佛。
Homage to the Buddha in the Land of Ultimate Bliss in the West, the greatly kind and compassionate Amitabha!

南无阿弥陀佛。(念佛十遍、百遍)
Homage to the Amitabha Buddha! (Chant name of the Buddha hundreds of times)

(大众念佛毕。引礼师呼受皈依者礼谢和尚三拜,起立于旁。维那师举回向偈大众同接和。)
After chanting name of the Buddha, the protocol monk indicates all recipients bow and prostrate to the Venerable master three times as appreciation. The Karmadana starts the verse of transference followed by the assemblies responding in chorus.

受皈功德殊胜行,无边胜福皆回向;
普愿沉溺诸众生,速往无量光佛刹。
十方三世一切佛,诸尊菩萨摩诃萨,
摩诃般若波罗蜜!

I dedicate the merit and virtue from the profound act of taking refuge
With all its superior and limitless blessings 
With the universal vow that all beings sunk in defilement, 
Will quickly go to the land of the Buddha of limitless Light (Amitabha)
All Buddhas of the ten directions and the three periods of time, All Bodhisattvas, Mahasattvas
Maha Prajna Paramita! (The assemblies intone together)

(和尚下座,礼佛三拜毕,回向赞竟。二引礼师双鸣手磬先行,受皈者次之,和尚居末。如常仪送归方丈。复回座前,礼谢大众三拜。)
The transference is accomplished after the master leaves the seat and bows down to prostrate three times. Two protocol monks walk in front with ringing the inverted bell, followed by the recipients and other lay people. Respectfully see the master back to the abbot’s room as usual, then return back the seats and bow down to prostrate three times to the assemblies as appreciation.


授居家二众三皈仪规毕。
The Ceremony of Ordaining Refuge in Three Jewels to Laymen and Laywomen is Over

(律中有云,受皈戒者,对师所说,如不了知,则不生皈戒之体,不得皈戒。故请授皈戒师于各节开示中,务请详作讲解。受皈戒者除至心听受外,最好能预作演习。以期如法授受,得大利益。)
It is said in Vinaya that the recipients who do not understand what exactly the master talks about, will not attain the embodiment of refuge or the precepts of refuge. Therefore, it is really necessary to invite the master to illuminate each aspect in details. Besides, the applicants must listen to the master carefully, a rehearsal would be great, so as to be properly ordained according to the Dharma and thus attain great benefits.
